I truly enjoyed listening to Marcus Buckingham’s speech on capitalizing and playing to your strengths. As a result of being a teacher, I deal with teenagers on a daily basis. While most teenagers are not able to see the big picture of a situation, this is one area that I am proficient in. I am able to step back, look at other people’s perspectives and then make a decision. With teenagers, this is something I try to instill and teach them on a daily basis. This quality is also beneficial as an athletic director because I am able to see the coaches, student, parent, administrators view with any given situation.
I feel I am out of my area of strengths when I have to confront adults or teach in front of peers. I have been teaching since I was twenty three years old and I became an athletic director at the age of twenty five. I was and still am a young teacher, coach and athletic director compared to others in my profession. As a result confrontation and teaching those older than me is difficult for me. This is a part of my everyday job and with experience I have been improving.
Personally, in my work day I typically go to my strengths because I enjoy it. It comes easy to me which makes it more enjoyable and I can accomplish goals. When I have to confront my weaknesses, this is obviously difficult because it’s a weakness. Ultimately I have to deal with it and over time and with experience I have improved.
